Tourism-Related Accidents in Chicago

Tourism-Related Accidents in ChicagoLike many other countries around the world, the United States is flooded with thousands of visitors every day. We certainly see our fair share of them here in the Chicagoland area: in fact, in 2015, we broke the record with more than 52 million visitors to the Windy City. Unfortunately, just like any other place in the world, Chicago tourists can encounter some dangers while they visit.

Common dangers faced by visitors to Chicago

Aside from the regular dangers posed by travel – being pick-pocketed, getting lost, the risk of your hotel having bed bugs – there are certain hazards that tourists face while they’re here in Chicago or anywhere, really. They include:

  • Auto accidents. When you don’t know the area, getting around can be a hassle. When you don’t know the laws, it can be a danger – to you and to other drivers. Throw in distracted pedestrians, traffic and construction zones, and you could end up in a serious auto accident, leading to extensive property damage or injuries.
  • Negligent security measures. Attacks near and/or at hotels, motels and bars, including sexual assault of guests, is a serious problem for a lot of cities, whether you’re a tourist or not. Make sure to frequent places that have good lighting, and stay in hotels or B&Bs with adequate locks. Avoid bars and clubs in poorly lit areas or without security.
  • Drowning. Accidents can occur at hotel swimming pools or on boating trips around the city. If you’re swimming, make sure a lifeguard is on duty, and keep an eye on your children. If you take a boat tour, remain seated with your life vest on; for dinner cruises, make sure you know where the safety equipment is located, and avoid leaning over the rails.
  • Slips and falls. Improper hotel and/or motel maintenance can lead to guests tripping, slipping, and falling; so can construction and uneven pavement. Keep your eyes up and out of the map while you walk around Chicago.
  • Food poisoning. We think Chicago has the best food in the country, but that doesn’t mean every establishment is clean and up-to-code. Make sure you can see the certification wherever you choose to eat, and avoid buffets whenever possible. You never know how long the food has been out.
  • Airplane and airport accidents. O’Hare is one of the busiest airports in the country. Millions of people fly in and out of Chicago every year. It’s easy to get crushed in the masses. In the event of an incident on a plane, or a plane crash, you are at risk of serious, life-threatening injuries.
