Driver Injures 14 in Oak Park Multi-Vehicle Crash Before Taking His Own Life

What happened: Crash details
The driver, a 48-year-old man from Plainfield, headed southbound on Harlem Avenue at high speed. He ran a red light at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Lake Street, and collided with four other vehicles and a Pace bus. Investigators who arrived on the scene believe that the driver may have seen a pedestrian crossing the road and swerved to avoid them, causing the multi-vehicle crash.
Luckily, multiple witnesses saw the accident and called 911. One witness checked on the driver of the Toyota 4Runner. When they moved away from his vehicle, they heard a gunshot, triggering more calls to 911.
When Oak Park police arrived at the accident scene, they found the driver of the Toyota 4Runner “slumped over with a very apparent wound.” The gun lay on the floor. Officials confirmed that the driver had shot himself in the head, and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Eleven of the fourteen people injured in the crash at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Lake Street went to the hospital, but no serious injuries were reported.
The streets reopened around 2 p.m., but the incident is still under investigation, and officials haven’t provided additional information.
Who may be liable in a multi-vehicle crash
Generally, when there’s a car accident, the at-fault driver would typically bear primary responsibility. If the at-fault driver dies during the crash, you might be able to recover compensation through their car insurance. In some cases, even if a party is deceased, you might be able to file a claim against their estate.
When a car crash involves multiple vehicles, the number of injured people and their insurance companies will likely increase. This can make it much more difficult to narrow down who is legally responsible. Each injured party will have their own claim, competing against other claims – all with different insurance policy limits.
Other potential liability factors in multi-crash cases can include vehicle defects that might have caused or contributed to an accident, road hazards, traffic signal malfunctions, and even employer liability if an at-fault driver was working.
What injured victims should do after a car accident
If you’ve been in a car accident, the first step is to get medical attention. Even if your injuries seem minor at the time, get checked out. Document any and all injuries via notes or photos. It’s very important that if you have future follow-up appointments related to injuries sustained in the crash or treatments to help you recover, you don’t miss them.
Next, gather documents related to the accident. The police who arrive on the scene will likely prepare a police report. Get a copy. Also, if you have medical bills or any expenses related to the accident, including the cost to get you to and from medical appointments, keep all of your invoices and receipts.
Finally, be cautious about giving statements to insurance companies without legal representation. An experienced car accident attorney can help to communicate with adjusters and identify all available sources of compensation.
Compensation available to victims
Typically, accident victims can recover compensation when they’ve been injured in a car accident due to someone else’s negligence. This might include economic damages, such as medical expenses, lost income, and reimbursement for property damage, in addition to non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering and emotional distress.
